Biography of Hazel Dawn (stage name of Henrietta Hazel Tout) at: Hazel Dawn: The Pink Lady Keepapitchinin, 10 June 2008

Summary:

  • Came to NYC in 1911 to play in "The Pink Lady." Critics said she was better than the intended star and she soon became known as "The Pink Lady."
  • She played other Broadway roles, none as popular as The Pink Lady and also appeared in several movies.
  • Married wealthy Montana mining engineer Charles Gruwell in 1927. He died in 1941.
  • She also had a successful career as a casting director for a New York advertising agency.
  • She loved New York, but not above her home town of Ogden: "You�ve got all the money and all the artificial skyscrapers here,� she told a reporter, �but out there we have the real skyscrapers, mountains that mingle with the clouds.�
  • Lived in New York City and died here in 1988 at age 98.
