====Twelve Baptized in April and May====
The Connecticut conference of the Eastern States mission held their semi-annual conference at Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16, with good attendance throughout. President B. H. Roberts gave timely admonition and instruction at the various sessions. A report of the work during the previous six months showed a great increase over the same period last year, the distribution of literature being three times as great. More Books of Mormon were sold during the month of April than in any other previous month since October, 1917. Twelve baptisms were performed in April and May, and several other applications were received. We surely enjoy the Era; it has proved itself to be an asset in spreading the gospel message. The Saints and missionaries look forward with great anticipation to receiving it each month — '''Henry D. Taylor, president.'''
===Passing Events===
…
'''Mrs. Margaret Curtis Roberts''', wife of President B. H. Roberts of the Eastern States mission, passed away in New York, Saturday morning, March 13, 1926, at 6:30. Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of the late Theodore Curtis, Utah Pioneer, and was born about 75 years ago. When a young woman she was graduated from the Women's Medical college of Pennsylvania in 1887 and for upwards of 35 years she practiced medicine in Salt Lake. She will also be remembered as teacher of the Relief Society class of nurses and as a Church worker in many other capacities. For many years she was a member of the general beard of the Y. L. M. I. A.

On receipt of the sad and unexpected news, President Heber J. Grant immediately wired a message of condolence.

Mrs. Roberts was the mother of nine children. Surviving are only one daughter, Mrs. Joseph W. Neville, 36 S Street; one brother, Theodore W. Curtis, literary man of 'Boston, Mass., and a sister, Mrs. Ellis Shipp of Salt Lake. Mrs. Roberts attended the West Pennsylvania conference in Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 7, and spoke to more than 60 women, at the 1:30 p. m. session, delivering a valuable message on the duties of women, and their problems. Of this we are informed by Harold G. Clark, president of the conference. The funeral services were held in the 18th ward chapel, Salt Lake City, March 17, Bishop Thomas A. Clawson presiding. The speakers, President Heber J. Grant, George Albert Smith, Orson F. Whitney and Rulon S. Wells, paid eloquent and sympathetic tribute of love and respect to the departed sister, and spoke tender words of condolence to the bereft husband and the mourning friends. President Charles W. Nibley, President Rudger Clawson, and Elder Richard R. Lyman were among those present. A quartet composed of Margaret S. Hewlett, Pearl K. Davis, Hyrum J. Christensen and Professor A. C. Lund furnished sweet music. Elder J. Golden Kimball offered the invocation. Professor Willard Weihe rendered a violin solo. Elder Levi Edgar Young pronounced the benediction, and the grave was dedicated by Elder Charles H. Hart.
====M.I.A. in Connecticut====

John L. Allen, president of the New Haven conference, Hartford. Connecticut, reports three branches of the Church situated in the cities of Hartford and New Harven, Connecticut, and in Springfield, Massachusetts. These branches have only a population of twenty-one Latter-day Saints each, yet in them there is a fully organized M. I. A. in each branch. "We feel proud of the fact that we have three of the sixteen Mutual Improvement Associations of the Eastern States mission, and this is only one conference out of eleven conferences in the mission, placing us far ahead of the other conferences in the line of M. I. A. work. Here in Hartford the M. I. A. was organized just a few months ago under my direction and is the first organization of the kind in this branch, which is only a little over two years old. The M. I. A. is a great help and their meetings are the very best held in the branch, and has the largest attendance of any other meetings, not exceeding the Sunday services held every Sunday. We put on a special activities program or social the first meeting night of every month, thus keeping the people here interested in our work. We are following the regularly prescribed courses of study as outlined in the Era, and the lessons are holding the interest of all and are proving a great asset to missionary work. I feel from our present progress, that we will be able to do great things in the line of Mutual work in the future."

====The Sin of Unbelief====
The semi-annual conference of the Brooklyn conference, of the Eastern States mission, was held Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and 2. Saturday evening a general priesthood meeting was held and a round-table discussion followed in which a number of suggestions were made for the betterment of the work. Means were considered to increase attendance at sacrament meetings, and to make the work more effective, also ways of cooperating with the Saints.

The first Sunday session was held at 2700 Broadway, New York, at 10 a.m., devoted to the Sunday schools. The afternoon session was held at 2 o'clock. Elder Alvin R. Dyer and President Len H. Layton were released. General Church Authorities were sustained. A sextette was rendered by ladies of the New York branch — "My Prophet dear"; and President Roberts gave a powerful discourse on "A Message of God — The Sin of Unbelief." The closing session of the conference was held in the Brooklyn chapel. Elder Alvin R. Dyer was the first speaker and was followed by a quintette from New York, after which Professor Levi Edgar Young clearly and forcefully expounded some of the fundamentals of "Mormonism." The Spirit of the Lord was with us in all these services and we feel strengthened because of the "feast of reason and flow of soul" given us during the conference. We have fifteen missionaries in the conference. We feel greatly blessed in this choice field of labor, and prospects are bright for a successful winter's campaign. — Condensed from a report by A. M. Livingston.

===NINETY-FIFTH SEMI-ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE.===
…

Elder B. H. Roberts of the First Seven Presidents of Seventy and President of the Eastern States mission, the next speaker, observed that Elder McMurrin had reported the mission work on the Pacific coast. He would report the work on the Atlantic coast, he said. Comparison might seem unfavorable, he said, as the Gospel in the East is not so readily accepted as in the west, probably, lint it could not be said, Elder Roberts averred, that it is due to any lack of effort or diligence on the part of the missionaries.

Elder Roberts read a prepared report of missionary activities over the period of a recent month. One hundred and twentynine missionaries had distributed thousands of tracts, visited thousands of homes, held thousands of Gospel conversations, many meetings in homes, halls and open-air, and had put forth a vast amount of missionary work in the aggregate, he reported. And yet, he said, when results are given, the mere figures are not so gratifying, the number of baptisms are comparatively few. Thus, it might be said, declared Elder Roberts, that a ton of effort had been put forth for an ouuee of result. But, is that the true way to measure the result, he asked. When the value of a soul in the sight of God is considered, the result is mighty, he declared. In the same way, the Master accomplished a great work, putting forth His tons of effort regardless of the results, the speaker said.

Elder Roberts reported that within the past year, three chapels had been acquired in the Eastern States mission— one at Charleston, West Virginia, one at Baltimore, Maryland and one at Fremont, West Virginia. This progress, said Elder Roberts, would seem to mark the way to the establishment of permanent centers in the great land of America.

Here, the speaker referred to Church history, wherein is recorded the utterance of the Prophet Joseph Smith that the whole land of America is the Land of Zion. Elder Roberts said that the Prophet even designated Boston, New York and Philadelphia as places for stakes of Zion, and that Brigham Young, following the Prophet, said, in regard to the conception of Zion, that it is not to be merely Jackson County, Missouri, but all of the land of America.

Then, said Elder Roberts, came the martyrdom of the Prophet and the temporary delay in the establishment of Zion due to the migration westward of the Church. But now, he queried, after decades, duriug which the Lord's people have been trained and brought up under His care, might it not be said that the time is near when the Gospel word should spread to all the land, when stakes shall be built up all over the land of Zion.

Let Latter-day Saints get a larger conception of the field of labor than just Utah and the surrounding region, said Elder Roberts. " Let us conceive of this great land as the land of Zion," he said, "from Alaska to the islands of the sea, from seaboard to seaboard, with the center stake of Zion to be where it was promised by the Lord it should be — in Jackson County, Missouri." Zion has not been removed, said Elder Roberts, it is still America, and the temple of temples will be bnilt in the center stake.

===Church Organizations in Philadelphia===
The Era receives a report of the organizations in the Philadelphia branch, Eastern States Mission, from Elder George Stoll, Sr. About 100 members are enrolled and the branch receives considerable assistance from the Universities, as from forty to sixty Latter-day Saints attend school who come from Utah, Idaho, and various parts of the intermountain region. The average attendance at Sacrament meetings up to the end of July was 74. Regular monthly union meetings are held and the branch presidency with the conference president holds weekly meetings. Much good is being accomplished in the Relief Society. Bazaars and many other social activities are conducted and they have to their credit over $1500 for a new church building. The Sunday school has gradually advanced, there being 30 in average attendance, or 90% of the enrollment! The Mutual has had separate organizations of young men and young ladies for a year, with splendid results. The average attendance is 48. Much is expected from the Mutual since it is under the able leadership of Karl DeHaas, who has had wide experience with the young people in Church work. From four to six elders labor in and around Philadelphia. Ten baptisms have been held since the first of the year and two were scheduled for August. In the summer the elders labor in rural districts without purse or scrip and wonderful testimonies come to them, all of which add strength to the faith of the Saints. In general, the public receives the elders in a fair way and treats them kindly. A very remarkable picture of the Philadelphia branch conference presidency, and the presidencies and officers of the Relief Society, Sunday school, Y. M. and Y. L. M. I. A., and the missionaries was sent to the Era, but we regret that it is too large for satisfactory reproduction in an Era page.
Under the direction of President B. H. Roberts and Conference President Len H. Layton, the Manhattan conference, Eastern States Mission, held a very successful conference on May 31 and June 1, so Elder Layton reports. Two Priesthood meetings were held on Saturday, May 31 , one for missionaries only, in which strong testimonies were given and the other, a general meeting for all members holding the Priesthood. President Roberts occupied most of the time, advising the Saints to "stay where they are, that God's work might grow into stakes of Zion in these Eastern states." This admonition was valuable, as many of the Saints have a spirit of gathering to Salt Lake City.

On Sunday three sessions were held, one at 10 a. m., and 2 and 7:30 p. m. The first included a brief report of the work in the five branches, and reports of the Sunday School, M. I. A., and Relief Society work. A cello solo and vocal solo added to the enjoyment of this meeting. The second session was devoted to real gospel propaganda. The text announced is found in I Peter 3:15, "Be ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear." To this text four missionaries delivered very inspired remarks giving the reason for the hope that is within them, after which a male quartet sang, "Praying for you." President Roberts then bore his testimony of the hope that he had of eternal life. Edwin Tout sang a solo, accompanied by his daughter with violin obligate Francis O'Neill at the piano. At the third session, 160 people came to hear President Roberts treat a promising theme: "The value of religion and the way in which 'Mormonism' responds to it." Elders Hoff and Whalen sang, "The morning breaks, the shadows flee," a very fitting duet. The entire evening was turned over for this discourse. He gave it in a series of deep and well organized thoughts, showing that the value of a religion is to be able to learn from it your purpose in life. This conference, it is felt, is a step towards gaining a better foothold in greater New York.

==The Literary Wants of Utah==
:''New York Evening Post'', November 27, 1850, p. 2

===The Literary Wants of Utah===
Congress had appropriated five thousand dollars for the commencement of a library for the territory of Utah, and John M. Bernhisel, of the Mormon settlement at Deseret, is appointed the agent to procure the books. Mr. Bernhisel has issued a circular, addressed "To the Authors, Editors, and Publishers of the United States," in which he speaks of the universal disposition of the people of the territory to submit cheerfully to the laws of the government of the Union, and their sense of the importance of preparing themselves, by proper institutions of education and by all the means of information derived through the art of printing, for taking their place hereafter in the Union as an intelligent, and prosperous state. The position of the territory, he observes, cuts off the inhabitants from the depositories of learning accessible to torahs, and the mails arrive at distant periods. He closes his circular thus:

"He will remain in the city of New York a considerable portion of the winter for that purpose. While thus appropriating his time, it has occurred to himself and his friends, that a most agreeable and profitable method of furthering this design, would be to acquaint authors and publishers of books and newspapers throughout the United States, with the wants of his constituents, and to assure them of the sincere gratitude with which donations from them will be received.

"All such files of papers and copies of works can be forwarded by mail, addressed to the Hon. George Briggs, Member of Congress, New York city. The word Utah should be written on the outside of the envelope inclosing them, so that their destination may be more correctly distinguished from works intended for the honorable member himself. By this arrangement they will be assured of reaching their destination, and of their appropriation to their avowed object.

"The autograph of the author or donor will increase the value of his gift, and convey to the reader of a succeeding generation a pleasing moment of the man to whom he may be indebted for his means of communicating with the mind of a preceding age. The volumes, firmly enveloped in thick wrappers may be forwarded at your earliest convenience as above requested."
====Leader of Latter Day Saints Eastern Mission Explains Church Organization====
James H. Moyle, president of the Eastern States mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Elder Leonard C. Anderson spoke at the services of the local mission at 295 Main street last night.

Mr. Moyle, who after having been an attorney for more than half a century accepted the call to work in the church when past 70, explained the organization of the church and its missionary system, pointing out that the missionaries receive no special training before being sent out. He said that he had entered the missionary field without instructions and that his only commission was that of being set apart by the laying on of hand of the president of the church.

Mr. Moyle said that claim to divine authority is peculiar to but two religions today, the Roman Catholic and the Mormon.

"The restoration of the gospel in 1830 has brought many teachings spoken of by Christ into the present day church that bears his name." he said. "What church sings in its service a song entitled "We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet"? A prophet is a spokesman for God on this earth."

"Since time immemorial men have tried to find out God and his relationship to man," stated Elder Anderson, "with the result that many conflicting creeds have arisen. To most people of Christian faiths God is incomprehensible due to their ethereal creeds. Man has tried to find out God in the laboratory. There is no objection to using the scientific method, providing the proper tools are used. As the astronomer uses his telescopes and observatories, the Christian seeking to know God should use the methods prescribed by Christ, namely faith and works. Joseph Smith in making his unique declaration to the world that he had found out God used that tool spoken of by the apostle James when he said, "without faith it is impossible to please him."
Ella Mae Lemmon, head of relief society work for the Eastern States mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will arrive in this city this afternoon from headquarters in Brooklyn. Miss Lemmon was actively engaged in missionary work in Poughkeepsie a year ago, and sang over the radio daily until the local station was closed. Later she was transferred to Newburgh and to Brooklyn, where she directed relief work. Because of a shortage of missionaries she has been sent here to assist temporarily Beth Swenson, who has been working here for the past four months.
Each of these young men and women works two years or more in the mission field without salary for remuneration of any kind, as there is no paid ministry in the "Mormon" Church. Their commission is literally, "Freely ye have received, freely give."
On the 22nd day of September last we had the privilege — four of the General Authorities from this city and one who was located at Brooklyn as the president of the Eastern States mission, Brother Brigham H. Roberts — of being present at the wonderful conference held at the Joseph Smith farm, in the Sacred Grove, and at the Hill Cumorah, celebrating the one-hundredth anniversary of Joseph Smith's first view of the plates from which the Book of Mormon was later translated. A very remarkable conference for three days was held there. A rich outpouring of the Spirit of the living God was experienced. I am grateful, indeed, to President Brigham H. Roberta for arraugiug bliat conference, for I am free to confess, that in the multitude of duties and responsibilities resting upon me, I might have neglected dial one hundredth anniversary. I feel grateful to Brother Roberts that he did not allow it to pass without a very splendid conference. It was one that each and every person who attended will look back to with that same pleasure and joy and satisfaction with which we look back upon the dedication of our temples, and the passing of other mile-stones, so to speak, in the history of this Church.

I remarked in the first meeting that we were sorry beyond expression that President Roberts' health was snch that he could not be present, that it seemed to me very much like the great play of Hamlet with Hamlet left out. Brother Roberts had prepared a very remarkable program, covering many episodes and historical matters in connection with the rise of the Church through the one hundred years, nearly, of its history ; and there were no words with which we could convey adequately our regret that the man to whom Ave were indebted for all of these labors could not take a more active part than he did because of his poor heath upon that occasion ; and yet Ave rejoice that he was able to lift up his voice on several occasions during that conference, and also to be present during some of the meetings, although his health was such that he had to withdraw from a few of them before their close. I have expressed, and heard others who were present express sincere and heartfelt regret that the prayer delivered hy Brother Roberts in the Sacred Grove on Sunday morning, September 23rd, Avas not taken down in writing. I cannot remember Avhen my heart was more stirred, and when I have had my affection called out to the Lord more perfectly than upon the occasion Avhen Brother Roberts uttered that prayer in the Sacred Grove, where the Lord God Almighty, and where Jesus Christ our Redeemer, had appeared and conversed with the prophet, or more properly speaking, with the boy Joseph Smith, afterward the prophet of the living God.

===The Ninety-Fourth Semi-Annual General Conference===
…

President Brigham H. Roberts of the Eastern States Mission, the second speaker, began his remarks with a few words of praise for England, his native land. Recalling the previous remarks of Elder Reed Smoot on the sacrifices and burdens of England, he declared he was proud of England as a nation, because it was determined that international treaties and obligations mean more to the world than "mere scraps of paper." " When England went to the aid of Belgium and France it was in the interest of world freedom and against autocracy which was endangering the freedom of the world," he said. "Our own burden in the war was made comparatively light by reason of England's being so heavy. My heart is moved with sympathy until I pray God that that nation be relieved of the great burden assumed in the interest of freedom versus autocracy," he declared. Elder Roberts was impressed to speak in this manner, he said, because the prime minister of England during the war, David Lloyd George, was at that moment on American shores.

Speaking of mission work in the Eastern states he said there have been 130 to 140 missionaries in the field during the past year, constituting more or less a broken line in viewT of the vastness of the field of labor, which, he said, contains almost as many people as the entire United States at the time of the organization of the Church.

One motto of the missionaries, he said, is, "A mission in the Eastern States means absolute consecration to the service of God and fellowmen with all sin and folly eliminated." "We say to each other 'God With Us.' If God is with us we cannot fail. Our faith and trust is in God. We realize He is the foundation of faith and power. If He does not give us His spirit we can do nothing."

Recousecration to the work of the Lord on the part of the missionaries took place on May 15, the 95th anniversary of the restoration of the Aaronic priesthood, when a summer campaign began, he said. The missionaries left their lodgings and, without extra clothes or food, went out trusting in God. They found God themselves and many of His disciples. The campaign which culminated with the recent conference at Cuinorah met with exceptional success, he said.

President Roberts quoted from the Rochester Herald which gave favorable comment on the celebration of the anniversary of the first visit of the Angel Moroni to the Prophet Joseph Smith. " We sought to live again the great epic events that resulted in the restoration of the Gospel," President Roberts said.
:''Improvement Era'', November 1923, pp. 74-75

===The Centennial Celebration at Palmyra===
A conference of the Eastern States elders and a number of the authorities of the Church, including Presidents Heber J. Grant, Rudger Clawson, Elder Joseph Fielding Smith and James E. Talmage, of the Council of the Twelve, was held at Palmyra with exercises at the Hill Cumorah, and the Sacred Grove, on Sept. 21-23, 1923, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the visitations of Moroni to the Prophet Joseph Smith and the revealed existence of the Book of Mormon. There were besides in attendance, Elder John H. Taylor, president of the Northern States mission; Elders Asahel H. Woodruff and D. J. Lang, of Z. C. M. I., and Elder Edwin F. Tout, who acted as chorister and Nannie Tout Graham, organist. Also President B. H. Roberts, of the Eastern States mission, and Secretary LeRoi C. Snow, with about two hundred missionaries including fourteen lady missionaries and many other Church visitors.

An elaborate program had been prepared which was presented in seven public meetings, some held in the Sacred Grove, some on the Hill Cumorah and others in a great tent erected on the Joseph Smith farm, near Palmyra. The meeting on Sunday, at 2:30 p. m., September 23, on the Hill Cumorah, with President B. H. Roberts presiding, was attended by about two hundred missionaries, fifty visiting members of the Church and about one thousand non-members. They were assembled on the Hill Cumorah under the Stars and Stripes and the Cumorah and Ramah flags. At this meeting, which was very impres„sive, the minds of those present were carried back to the incident of the visit of Moroni to the hill and the miraculous coming forth of the Book of Mormon. This gathering was a significant feature of the conference and was attended by representatives of several of the great newspapers of the United States, particularly of Rochester, New York. The associate editor of the Rochester Herald was present during several of the meetings and had interviews with the authorities of the Church, the results of which appeared in several lengthy and illustrated articles in the Herald; and the Rochester Journal gave complete details of the celebration without bias, setting forth many of the beliefs and customs of the Latter-day Saints.

President Brigham H. Roberts, unfortunately, was ill and was able to attend but a few of the meetings. This was the only regrettable circumstance incident to the conference. The conference and its meetings and the general gathering will never be forgotten by those who were privileged to participate.

The exercises were followed with great interest by the eastern press, as well as by the Saints in Utah and elsewhere. This was but natural. It was a notable mile-stone in the journey of the Church on the highway of history.

The Book of Mormon, the showing of the plates and the coming forth of which were commemorated there at that time, has now been before the world almost a hundred years. The story of its origin is the record of the greatest miracle of our age; and yet, criticism has never been able to break down the evidence of its truth. The doctrines of the book are true; for they agree with those of the Bible, and a doctrine cannot be true in one volume and false in another. They bear, as Dr. Widtsoe has expressed it, the evidence of their truth in themselves. But the Book of Mormon is also a historic record of some of the ancient Americans. This historic part of the book must yet be tested by external evidence, such as may be furnished by archaeological research, by the intelligent analysis of the Indian languages, and by a careful study of the traditions, myths, religious concepts, social institutions, etc.

As this line of research proceeds it will be found that the history of the Book of Mormon is the only scientific record in existance of the solution of the riddle of the origin and culture of the Indian, and through such research under the guidance of the Divine Spirit, even the exceedingly difficult subject of Book of Mormon geography will become clear and instructive. — A.

==Mormon Temple To Grace Gotham==

===Mormon Temple To Grace Gotham===
NEW YORK, June 24.—Encouraged by their success in the East, the Latter Day Saints, as the disciples of Joseph Smith call themselves, plan to build in this city a Mormon temple, to serve as a place of worship for proselytes residing in the neighborhood of New York, and as the Eastern headquarters of the church. In time smaller edifices are to be erected in other States to provide for congregations as they may be organized.

"We are not sending proselytes to Utah and the adjoining States by the trainload, as reported in some newspapers," said John S. McQuarrie, president of the Easter States Mission to-day. "It is the policy of the Mormon Church to-day to discourage centralization., The Latter Day Saints intend to spread their doctrine broadcast. The propaganda will be made universal. To facilitate the work it is planned to localize our communities. Wherever the number of converts warrant it owe shall establish churches or places of worship."

Is it true that a Mormon temple is to be erected in New York?" Elder McQuarrie wa asked.

"Yes, that will come in time," he replied. "Just when, however, I do not know. The matter has been under discussion by the church authorities."

Elder B. F. Cummings, who arrived recently from Salt Lake City, expressed the opinion that a church edifice would rise in New York and in the course of a year or two.

"We have 1,000 followers in this vicinity," he said. "and it may be found cheaper to build a temple than to provide temporary places of worship for our people."

Although indisposed to discuss the question of a site for the projected temple, certain references made to-day by lay members of the sect to Central Park West indicate that the "Saints" have that locality in mind.
===Leader Honored by Jaycees Here===
The national president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce was the guest of honor last night at a dinner of the Junior Chamber here as he concluded a one-day tour of Connecticut. The event took place in the Housatonic lodge, Stratford.

E. Lamar Buckner, the national leader, delivered greetings to the Jaycees and urged them to expand their activities into major programs that will aid all in the community.

Mr. Buckner, from Ogden, Utah, voiced strong support for the candidacy of Edwin H. May, of Hartford, as his successor in the presidency when the national election takes place next year. Mr. May is national vice president and is a former state president of the Junior Chamber.

Mr. May, David Oscarson of New Haven, present state president, Arthur Clifford who is president of the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, and W. Dudley Jewel, executive president of the Bridgeport Chamber, were among the guests at the dinner.

Representatives from 17 of the 22 Junior Chambers in the state attended the dinner, including those in Westport, Milford, Danbury, Greenwich, and Stamford.

The invocation, given by A. Park Shaw, president of the Bridgeport chapter, was a message from Mr. Buckner's father, a Mormon leader in Ogden.

Mr. Shaw received a special award from Mr. Buckner for obtaining 50 memberships in the junior chamber. The Jaycees have lapel pins to reward those obtaining up to 25 members and the national president said that a new pin will be designed for the 50-member award, the first recorded int he history of the organization.

Announcement was made that Bill Summers, National league umpire, will be the speaker athlete the Dec. 17 meeting of the Bridgeport chapter in the Log Cabin inn.
Mahonri M. Young, of Ridgefield, internationally famous sculptor and grandson of Brigham Young, Mormon leader, makes sketches oof oxen at the weight-pulling contest at the Danbury Fair. Commissioned in 1946 by the State of Utah to do the heroic statue of his famous forebear which stands at the entrance of Emigration canyon, on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Mr. Young won national acclaim for this masterpiece. The draft beasts which hauled pioneering Mormons across the continent are the subject of perennial study by Mr. Young.
===Eastern States Mission===
A comparative report of the Sunday Schools of the Eastern States Mission, covering the first half of the present year, makes interesting reading and show a commendable state of activity.

The Black Creek, N. Y. school had an average attendance of 85 1-3 per cent; Albany, N. Y. 84.6 per cent; Providence, R. I. 62 per cent and New Haven, Conn. 80.8 per cent, while six other schools ran between 70 and 80 per cent, and five others between 60 and 70 per cent.

Mission Superintendent of Sunday Schools, Elder George W. Ashton, reports that the inauguration of these reports- had resulted in more careful record keeping, and brought an increase in attendance through the friendly rivalry induced by these comparative reports.

Superintendent Ashton also reports the holding of successful Sunday School Conferences, in which local workers have taken great interest, and through which they have been brought to realize more fully that their school is one of the great system of Sunday Schools conducted by the Church throughout the world, and inspires in them a more earnest desire to be in harmony in lesson work and all activities with the rest of the schools.
