[edit] Brigham Young's Prospects
The arrival of over seven hundred Mormons at New York on the last of last week, shows that the machinery of Mormondom is not idle of fruitless, as to results. There will be large accessions to the Salt Lake region, and Brigham Young and his followers will become more bold and fearless in their resistance to Federal authority than ever. Since the government has invested largely in Utah stocks, by sending an army of occupation there, it is very natural for the people to inquire what an army is accomplishing, and how rich a dividend is likely to be realized from the investment? To all human appearance they have done nothing but attend Gov. Cumming, who is really doing nothing of importance to the Federal Government or its interests in Utah. Mormonism proceeds with its plans and purposes, and is daily "lengthening its cords and strengthening its stakes."
