Diary of Benjamin W. Driggs

Source: Driggs, Benjamin W. Diary. (Film 920, Reel 50), 6pp. (Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, Microforms) pp. 5-7.

Aug. 12th. Came in sight of land. Came by Sandy Hook and up the river. Very fine place. Passed the quarantine officials "OK". Came up opposite New York. Layed off the docks for about 6 hours. Cabin passengers [p. 6] went off by try [UNCLEAR]. We got our luggage through all right by paying $40. We were taken to Castle Gardens at 4 p.m., landed &c. I took a room in the Stephen's house after which I went over to Williamsburg. Stayed with Brothers Byweather & Frost. Spent a good time with the folks.

Aug. 13th. Wrote a letter to President A. [Albert] Carrington, also to my folks. Returned to New York. Helped the Saints all day. Crossed the river over to Jersey City. Got the people on the cars. The weather very oppressive. We were quite busy all day in the City. Left Jersey about 7 p.m. [p. 7] A heavy storm came on just as we left the spot. The Saints were all pretty comfortable having ample room. We passed as very pleasant night.
