The RLDS Church first established a branch in Brooklyn in 1875. The branch was reorganized and incorporated in 1885. By 1891, the branch had grown to a membership of about 50 active members[1]. The branch was presided over by John Potts in 1890[2], and was included in the Philadelphia district, which was presided over by George Potts, a Brooklyn resident[3]. Meetings were held i Epworth hall, on Fulton street[4] near Rockaway avenue[5].
In 1891 they had recently purchased a 70 by 104 foot plot of land on East New York avenue, near Sackman street, and had announced plans to construct a $4,000 building
