Jeffersonian Meeting at Salem, N. J.

A meeting of the friends of Gen. Smith of Nauvoo, Ill. as a candidate for President was held in Piles Grove, Salem co., New Jersey, on the evening of the 18th of June, 1844.

J. Roberson was call to the chair and T. Long was chosen Clerk.

Mr. E. T. Benson stated the object of the meeting and suggested the propriety of holding a state convention of the friends of Gen. Smith.

On motion, Resolved, that a state convention of the friends of Gen. Smith, be called at Trenton, on the 8th day of August next.

On motion, Resolved, that the friends of Gen. Smith be requested to organize in every part of the state immediately and send delegates to the convention at Trenton.

On motion, Resolved, that electors favorable to the election of Gen. Smith to the Presidency be selected by his friends in each Electoral District of the state, and submit their names to the Trenton Convention.

On motion, Resolved, that a committee of three be appointed to call a meeting of the friends of Gen. Smith in the county of Salem.

Whereupon Messrs. Roberson, Sheets and Goforth were appointed.

On motion, Resolved, that the minutes of this meeting be published in the New York Prophet, Times and Seasons, Nauvoo Neighbor and other papers.

After a very spirited address from Mr. Benson and Roberson the meeting adjourned.
