Monday 23rd Long Island in sight at daylight, & at 6 a.m. anchored at quarantine. At 8, docked. Agent James H. Hart met me on board & instructed me in relation to passing the customs house officers.
The day was spent in passing the customs officers, & getting through Castle Garden, & at 6 p.m. crossed over to Jersey City & took train for Chicago via Erie Railroad to Salamanca, then by Chicago & Atlantic to Chicago. We left new York at 8:50 p.m.

As I wrote you from New York, we arrived there at the Guion Dock at 8 a.m., and from that time till about 2 p.m. the dock presented a most busy scene. I was interviewed by several reporters at Castle Garden, one of whom gave a fair statement of facts in the World, with only a few slight misrepresentations. We left Castle Garden about 6 p.m. for Jersey City and found eleven cars ready for us, ten for the Saints and one coach for the elders, which proved to be ample room, as they were large cars. �

� The envoy from the court of Spain to Washington is on board, and sought an interview with me, to learn something about our people. Several other saloon passengers have chatted freely with us, and one, a Mr. Samuel Dalton, a New York merchant, has attended some of our meetings. He insisted on giving me ten shillings for the benefit of some of the steerage passengers who were sick, to procure something for their comfort. He also asked for an interview, to [p.442] discuss religion with me, which lasted about two hours, and at its close he admitted that the question of salvation for the dead was a great revelation to him.
New York, Monday 23.--Arrived at 6 a.m. Leave Jersey City at 8:00 p.m. O.K.

Monday, [June 23]. We landed at New York at 9 A.M. We sailed 291 miles and had a very pleasant trip over the Atlantic.
From Kjobenhavn to Hull, it is 600 miles; from Hull to Liverpool, 140; from Liverpool to Queenstown, 240 miles. We stayed in the Guion Line warehouse until about 2 P.M., finding our boxes and loading them on a small steamer that took them to Castle Garden. We stayed there for some time and got onboard a steamer that left between 5 and 6 o�clock. It took us over the river to Jersey City. We left there at 9 o�clock in the evening on the train. Bro. L.R. Outzen and I made our bed together on the seats.
