October 16. We have seen New York. We checked and saw if we had anything that we were not allowed to have. We were there 10:30 and had our stuff examined. I told them I had a piece of material. They wanted $1.00 for that but nobody asked for it. We went aboard right away, went to Castle Garden where all the emigrants were registered and everything went fine. After that we were put aboard a boat, Roanoke, at 4 o'clock. This boat went from New York to Norfolk. Everybody was glad we had 1st class aboard. Good beds, good food. Nice place to eat. Later we looked at books. I wrote a letter to Jordan to Utah. We stayed in New York five or six hours. A musicker sang good. We went to bed and slept good.

President George Teasdale.

Dear Brother,--

We arrived in New York this morning at eleven o'clock, after a very pleasant voyage, having only one day of heavy sea. Mr. Gibson met us, and did all in his power to aid us.

Our emigrants were taken off and their luggage examined before the others, which brought us ahead considerably. The customs officers were also very kind to us, causing us no more trouble than was necessary. The examination at Castle Garden lasted only a few minutes, they passing our people through almost without question. We had to leave a sister from Copenhagen, with her two children, on account of diphtheria; they were well when we left, but it seemed the doctor did not consider them quite safe yet; they will be sent along as soon as possible.

The officers on this boat are very kind, doing all they can for our comfort. We expect to arrive at Norfolk about 3 p.m., and to proceed on our journey this evening.
