- Care should be taken to not confuse this man with James Arlington Bennett, a Brooklyn businessman who DID join the Church.
30 July 1842: "The Mormon University, at Nauvoo, Ill. has conferred the honorary degree of L.L.D. upon James Gordon Bennett, Esq. editor of the N.Y. Herald. Bennett is a worthy recipient of all the honors of that distinguished institution." - American Masonic register, Albany, New York
