[edit] Two New Missionaries for Mormon Church Arrive on Assignment

Elder Hal Curtis and Miss Carol Clark arrived in Norwich Wednesday as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). Elder Curtis replaces Elder Blair S. Kenny who has been transferred to Niagara Falls and joins Elder Bert Thorp here. Miss Clark replaces Miss Gladys Holt who has completed her missionary tour and returned to her home in Canada and joins Miss Ethel Horspool here.

Missionaries of the Mormon faith have been assigned to the Norwich area for more than two years. Their purpose is not to convert people to their faith but to explain the purposes and beliefs of the Mormon faith and remove prejudice toward the religion that has existed in the eastern states for several years. All men and women of the faith act as missionaries for a period fo time, 24 months for men and 18 for women, without pay.

Elder Curtis, the new male missionary for the area, is a native of Bountiful, Utah. He has labored in Philadelphia for the past three months.

Elder Curtis attended the University of Utah for two years where he majored in education and speech and was an outstanding member of the drama department. He is a graduate of Davis high in Utah.

Before leaving for Niagara Falls, Elder Kenny, who has been located here for several months, paid tribute to the friendliness of the people of Norwich and said Norwich was the place most of the church's missionaries desired to be assigned because of its warm hospitality and friendly spirit. "I am sure Elder Curtis will enjoy his assignment in Norwich as much as I have," Elder Kenny stated.

The two elders, Curtis and Thorp, reside at 44 Silver and are available as speakers for clubs or organizations.

Miss Clark, who joins Miss Horspool here, is a native of Sandy, Utah, and is a graduate of the University of Utah. Prior to her missionary duties, she was a service representative of a Utah telephone company. During the summers, Miss Clark has worked at Sun Valley and Grand Canyon. For the past three months she has labored as a missionary in the Philadelphia region.

The women representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reside at 11 Mitchell and are available as speakers for clubs or organizations interested in leanring more of the Mormon faith.

Both Elder Curtis and Miss Clark expressed pleasure at being assigned to Norwich, stating it has been highly praised by missionaries who have served here. THey are anxious to meet the people of the city and will welcome the opportunity to visit with any residents.
