New York Evening Star, September 2, 1837, p.

Emissary of the Gold Bible ProphetCharge of Counterfeit—Josiah Bartlett, a decent looking youth, brought up yesterday to the Police, for passing on the 30th a bill for $20 on the Kirtland Safety Society Bank (the Mormon Imposter's Rag Factory, Ohio) on Mr. E. Ferris of 444 Nassau st. The Courier says: Mr. F. stated on the day in question, Bartlett called and purchased boots and shoes to the value of $23, and the bill in question was tendered in payment and received. Previous to this MMr. F. had taken two ten dollar bills of the same Bank, and has since seen the man who passed them off in company with Bartlett, which on ascertaining that they wer bad, led him to suspect the pair and Bartlett was arrested. A tailor, and acquaintance of Mr. F. had taken from the prisoner $440 of the same money, whose value he soon found out, and compelled the fellow to restore his purchase and receive the money back. He was remanded for examination.
