Middletown CT Constitution, v. VII n. 340, 3 July 1844, p. 2.

NEW CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY.

The N. Y. Journal of Commerce states that a paper is printed in that city to advocate the claims of Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet, for the Presidency, and that a meeting of his friends was held at Military Hall on the 11th last. We have no doubt that Joe will get as many electorial votes as John Tyler, though the Madisonian officially announces that Mr. Tyler's name will not be withdrawn from the contest.—If the Mormonites in the country should happen to outnumber the office-holders, the ticket pledged to the Prophet will receive the strongest support.
