The meeting in behalf
New York Tribune, 3 March 1848, p. 2.
The meeting in behalf of the perishing Mormon fugitives from the dispersion at Nauvoo is to take place this evening at the Chapel of the New-York University, and we again entreat the attendance of citizens who are impelled by humanity and Christian compassion. Let not men of small ability say, 'This is work for the rich,' and so neglect it themselves; for there is no hope or expectation that any very large sum will be contributed. If every man who can give a dollar without serious inconvenience will do so, it will probably be the means of saving a thousand human lives—a matter which seems to us of more account that building half a dozen Washington Monuments, though this, too, may well be in its season. The danger is, that the few will say, 'We have calls enough nearer home,' and the many leave all to the few, and so little or nothing be done. We entreat that this may not be. We repeat the call of the meeting:
A meeting to take measures for the relief of the suffering Mormon fugitives, will be held at the Chapel of the University on Friday evening, March 3, at 8 o'clock. The Mormons who have come on from the West to make known the condition of their association will be present.
