The Mormon Meeting

New York Herald, 4 March 1848, Col. B

Mormon Meeting.--We give in our columns to-day, a brief report of the meeting last evening, called for the purpose of devising some relief for the famishing Mormons, now wandering in the deserts of Missouri, beyond the line of Western civilization.

These Mormons have cut a great figure during the last few years; but their present destitute condition has spring from their ignorance and fanaticism. By the practice of common sense, and common decency, they might have oontinued to live in the Western States up to the day of judgment. They were, however, led astray by vanity and fanaticism. They left their habitations, and took up their line of march through the wildernesses of Missouri, towards the Rocky Mountains, under the expectation that the Lord would rain down manna from heaven, to feed them with, as he did at the request of Moses, to feed the children of Israel. But manna is much scarcer and dearer the present day than it was in the days of Moses--of course, they have to come to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and other Atlantic cities, to get the means to buy a little flour and corn meal, or any thing, to help them along.

We hope they may get a mouthful, both of food and common sense.
