Mormon Wives.

New York Tribune, 17 December 1856, p. 7

MORMON WIVES. A Narrative of Facts Stranger than Fiction. By Metta Victoria Fuller. 12mo. pp. 326. Derby & Jackson.

The social condition of the Mormon population in Utah is used by the writer of this volume as the material for a high-wrought narrative. The incidents which enter into its construction have too much the air of romance to be regarded as matters of fact, but the spirit of the work is fully confirmed by all authentic accounts from the seat of despotism and licentiousness over which Brigham Young presides in the name of the Lord. Indeed it would be difficult to paint in too dark colors the fanatical and cruel system under which woman becomes worse than a slave, and man can scarcely escape transformation into a tyrant and a brute. The composition of the work shows considerable descriptive talent, and its perusal cannot fail to produce a vivid impression of the woes inflicted by superstition and lawless passion.
