The New York Organ of the Mormons Discontinued

The New York Mormon, published to-day, announces the discontinuance of the journal, without assigning any reasons for the same. It does not inform us whether its sudden demise is owing to the declension of Mormonism in these parts, or whether Brigham Young has summoned those shining lights of the church, Brothers Taylor and Appleby, to Utah, to aid him in the present crisis by their superior wisdom. It may be that Brigham is about to concentrate all his strength at Salt Lake City; but it strikes us that the death of the Mormon is rather attributable to the lukewarmness of the elect. In its last speech and dying declaration the Mormon bewails the iniquity of the Gentiles in the following language, the appropriateness of which will be at once apparent to the reader. Quoth the Mormon

The mantle of darkness is fast enshrouding the nation; wickedness is visibly on the increase—in short, peace is taken from the earth, and "the Prince, the power of the air" rules triumphant among the children of men. What a melancholy spectacle—the earth that rolled in purity from the hands of its creator is now covered with corruption. Man, created in the image of God, is now emaciated, paisied, paralyzed and diseased, "from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet," through transgression of the laws of heaven; woman, the gift of the Lord to man as a "help-meet," is degraded and debased—his victim or his partner in crime. Every generation is worse than its predecessor, and the end must be wreck and ruin.
