Lecture on Brigham Young

New York Commercial Advertiser, March 21, 1859

Lecture on Brigham Young—The name of Col. Thomas L. Kane, of Philadelphia, was in the mouths of everybody a year ago. It ws to his influence with Brigham Young, and his active agency in harmonizing feeling in Mormondom, that an open war between the United States troops and the Mormons did not break out. Indeed it was doubtless due to him, that an ambush was not devised for our troops as a first greeting to the "hospitable graves" to be provided for many of them in Utah. Col. Kane had daily and constant intercourse with the head of the Mormon Church, saw the operations of the system of which he was the master spirit, and the secret workings of the mind itself, which directed and controlled the masses of the latter day saints. This gentleman, a brother of Dr. Kane, has been invited to address the Historical Society, and this evening, at the ball of the Society, corner of Second avenue and Eleventh street, he will deliver a lecture on the "Executive of Utah," a potentate, in regard to whom, everybody has an imperfect knowledge. Accurate information will be derived by hearing Col. Kane on Monday evening. We trust there may be a full house.
