Sanitary Condition of the City.

PROSPECTS OF A HEALTHY SUMMER—THE STREET CLEANING—ABATEMENT OF NUISANCES, ETC.

Judging by present appearances this summer bids fair to be the healthiest that has blessed New York for a period of several years—a condition of things which undoubtedly is due to the manner in which Mr. Delavan, the City Inspector, has prosecuted the work of street cleaning and the removal of nuisances from the city limits. … It should also be remembered that in June last the city was crowded with strangers, drawn hither by the visit of the Japanese Embassy, and that in the early part of the month some eight hundred Mormons arrived here, one hundred of whom were obliged to go to hospital, afflicted with small pox, marasmus and other disorders. It is believed that more than fifty of these one hundred Mormons have since died and been buried.
