Arrival of Mormons

New York Daily Tribune, 23 May 1861, p. 5

ARRIVAL OF MORMONS.—The emigrant-ship Underwriter, which arrived at Castle Garden yesterday, brought 618 Mormons from Scotland and the north of England. Their appearance was generally good, though no large share of intelligence could be ascribed to the mass. Among them, nearly one-half were females, and of these, perhaps half were young women ang girls, some fine-looking ones being among them. The Mormon Member of Congress and one or two Mormon preachers received these people kindly, and directed most of them to the houses of friends in this city and Williamsburgh. Another cargo of 800 is expected soon, and the faithful report that, including the latter number, there are 2,000 yet to come from the districts mentioned.
