Large Arrival of Mormons

New York Daily Tribune, 20 June 1861, p. 3

LARGE ARRIVAL OF MORMONS.—The ship Monarch of the Sea, Capt. Gardner, arrived at this port on Wednesday morning from Liverpool, having a general cargo and 954 Mormon passengers. This is the largest number of Mormons that ever arrived at this port in one vessel, all of whom are in fine health and good condition, and will leave to-morrow for Salt Lake City, where they intend to settle. Capt. G. informs us that the most perfect order and discipline is maintained with this class of passengers, that a most perfect unity of feeling exists between them and that they are apparently the most contented and happy people in existence. Great credit is due to Elder Jabez Woodward (Principal), H. O. Hansen, Niel Williamson, and others, for good management and kind attention to the comforts of this large company, who are under their especial care. The Monarch of the Sea has on board Wm. Brown Bradford, a negro, sent home by the American Consul, for an attempted murder.
