The New York Star of June 6th, says: "The Nevada reached Castle Gardens at 4:30 p. m., with about 400 Mormon recruits. As a class they were superior to the ordinary emigrants, their dress being better and their conversation and countenances showing a greater degree of education and intelligence. The Mormon Elder in charge of the expedition was found to be a middle aged man, of florid complexion, named Thomas Judd. He readily answered all questions propounded. He said he left for Europe about two years ago, as agent of the Mormon Church. Ever since he had been actively engaged in collecting the colony just arrived. There were 300 English recruits and 66 Scandinavians. There are at least three females to every man. The party will leave for Utah to-night, their baggage being checked for Ogden. From this they are to be sent to different parts of the Mormon domain."

5. Everybody out and around. Saw land about 10 a.m. Got to Guion Landing, New York at 2 a.m. Was met by cousin John, Drought's wife and daughter, and Brother [William C.] Staines. Passed revenue officer without opening luggage, by greasing. Land at Castle Garden at 5 p.m. Was very busy until about 7:50 p.m. when I and James went up to cousin H. Drought, 46 Madison Street, New York. Had supper and stopped overnight. 600 Minenots [UNCLEAR, POSSIBLY Mennonites], Russian, landed same day with us. [p.171]

Got up at 5:30 a.m. Went down to Castle Garden to attend to some business. Then went back to cousin Henry to breakfast. From there went to see Uncle David's wife. Saw her and her mother, but her family was away. Took the Elevated Railroad cars for Castle Garden. Got the folks tickets which amounted to 260 [an] adult.

6. Spent some time with cousin Henry. Saw McKenny. At 4 p.m. went over to Jersey City prior to starting for Pittsburgh on the Pennsylvania Railroad. We started at 7:30 p.m. Day warm and pleasant.

Dear Brother,--Between two and three this afternoon we arrived here all well and in good spirits. �

June 6th. Having got all things fixed we are to start by the Pennsylvania Central [p.397] Railroad for Zion, at 5 p.m. God has blessed us thus far on our journey, and our prayers are that he may do the same in the future.

With long remembrances of the happy time we have spent in the old country, spreading the gospel truths, I remain your brother in the everlasting covenant,

Wednesday 5th June, Got up at 5 o'clock and got on board, few there. Morning fine and mist quite cleared away. Was told we took pilot on board at 1/2 past 12 at night. Sighting a good many smacks this morning. Went down to breakfast at 8 and had a red herring and some Irish stew. Steerage passengers throwing their beds and meal utensils overboard. 10 a.m. Land not yet seen but all eager on the outlook for it. 11 a.m. approaching land. Sun gets warmer, everybody on deck and all seem to be glad that our sea journey is at an end. Steaming up the Hudson River and are waiting for doctor. [p.18] Doctor ultimately comes on board and we all pass before him, being all in good health and no sickness. We then proceed to the Guion landing place, where a few of the cabin passengers get ashore. Steam out again to the Guion pier, where Brother James met us. We had a busy time getting luggage out of hold and putting it on a tender. We got through it very smartly and well. Everything was in shipshape fashion and there was no trouble. Got into Castle Gardens about half past five. Stayed one night at Stevens Hotel, which is on the European plan. In Broadway we were informed this morning that the Idaho, one of the Guion line, which we passed on Wednesday 29 May, had struck on a rock off the Irish Coast and gone down in 20 minutes. All hands saved.

Thursday 6th June, Got up this morning, had breakfast, and took a walk up [p.19] Broadway and then to Central Park. Saw the menagerie there and were much pleased with the exhibition of so many animals, birds, etc. Had ice cream & some fancy bread. This treat was immensely thought of, we being all a little tired, that it was so cooling. Came back to hotel, had dinner and took ourselves off again to Castle Gardens. We got on to steam tender and crossed over to the Jersey side, where we got on to the railroad cars. We got started on our railway journey about 7 p.m. We got away very slowly with numerable stoppages.
