A Large Consignment of Mormons

New York Tribune, 17 June 1880, p. 8

The four European steamships which arrived yesterday, landed 2,579 immigrants at Castle Garden—the Wieland, from Hamburg, 908; the Wisconsin, from Liverpool, 830; the Abyssinia, from Liverpool, 538 and the Canada from Havre, 303. Among the passengers of the Wisconsin were 330 Mormons, accompanied by eleven missionaries, who will go to Salt Lake City and other portions of the Utah Territory. These converts to the faith of the Latter Day Saints were from England, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Schleswig-Holstein and the northern part of Germany. There were several old men and women among them, whose passages were paid by their children and other relatives in the Mormon territory. There were about one hundred children among the Mormon immigrants, a number of comely young women and several hardy young men. They will be forwarded to their destinations to-day.
