Journal of George Chandler Parkinson

Parkinson, George C. Journal, pp. 142-153.

Saturday, 30, The pilot came aboard in a very heavy fog. The steamer was stopped several times for "sounding." All went to bed with the happy expectation of landing in the morning.

July 1st, Sunday, At 3:45 a.m., we were awakened by the shout of land! land!! and we were soon on deck gazing at the land of Columbia. The doctor came aboard at about 4:30, and all steerage passengers were examined and passed on as in first class condition. [p.147]

We pulled into harbor at 8:30. Met Elder James H. Hart and Hon. John W Young, who came on, and after a short conversation we went ashore, passed the custom house officers.

Had all luggage examined and Saints went to Castle Gardens while the bishop and I went to No. 5 Battery Place (Elder Hart's office), where I wrote card to Father and one to Elder W.F. Smith, Liverpool; also letter to my wife stating that I should be in Ogden about Saturday evening. I then went to Castle Gardens, assisted the Saints with their luggage. Bought a glass of milk for my dinner and then rode on St. Car [streetcar] to two Echardt 619, 9th Ave., New York. Spent a couple of hours in conversation, had dinner at 6:15; went immediately to the Jersey City Depot and saw the Saints off. The train leaving at 8 p.m. All feeling well but worn out with so much traveling. [p.148] As Bro. Whitney and I had concluded to stay overnight and take the fast train on Monday evening, I went to Grand Central Hotel and put up for the night while he went with Bro. Richard Young to the Governors Island. My bed cost me one dollar.

Monday, July 2nd, Breakfast at restaurant, 25 cents. Came to the office, where I met Bro. Whitney and we both walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and took the streetcar to Greenwood Cemetery; strolled through it and had self a sandwich at a restaurant nearby. On to our [-] to G.C. Hotel I bought linen shirt collar cuffs and pair of socks. Went to hotel, wrote letters to Prest. John H. Smith and then, accompanied by Bro. Hart, we all went to Jersey City Depot and took sleeping car to Suspension Bridge.
