After coming in we was soon transferred to a [p.108b], in a boat, to Castle Garden. Our trunks was not examined by the custom officers. I took a trip up in the city on the Street Elevated Railroad miles to see my cousin, but I found that she had moved. Then I went to Castle Garden and visited the Saints to get ready to [SIC] leave. Some had to stay back on account of through tickets. I finished my letter; I went to Harts office. We then left N.Y. by boat at about 6 p.m. to Jersey City, where we boarded the train and left about midnight by the N.Y. & Erie R. Road.

We are now drawing near the shores of the United States, expecting to reach New York about 9 or 10 o'clock this evening. The pilot was taken aboard yesterday about 400 miles out from New York, and today everybody is on the "qui vive" looking out for ships and land and enquiring for news, a few papers having been brought on board by the pilot.
