Letter from Joseph J. Golightly and Lorenzo R. Thomas - October 23, 1890

Golightly, Joseph J. [Letter], Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star 52:45 (Nov. 10, 1890) p. 715.

New York, Oct. 23, 1890.

President B. [Brigham] Young

Dear Brother,--

According to your request we write you a few lines from here in relation to the company of Saints we have in our charge, that left Liverpool on the 11th instant. We anchored in this harbor last night, about nine o'clock, and entered the docks this morning. We have passed the customs officers, and also the United States Emigration Commissions at the Barge Office. Our company is now on the Old Dominion Company's S. S. "Guyandotte" and will leave here at 3 p.m. today for Norfolk, Virginia. The weather from Liverpool to New York was changeable, which occasioned smooth and rough sea. The steamer rocked a great deal, causing almost everyone in our company to suffer more or less from sickness. The officers on the steamer and railroad agents at New York were kind and courteous as usual. We are all very grateful to our Heavenly Father for the care he has taken of us thus far on our journey to Zion, and we earnestly trust we will reach our destination in perfect safety.

With kind regards to yourself and all at "42," [42 Islington WAS THE ADDRESS OF THE BRITISH MISSION IN LIVERPOOL] and ever praying for the blessings of God to attend you; we remain, dear brother, yours respectfully,

Joseph J. Golightly, president,
Lorenzo R. Thomas, secretary.
