Enemies of Mr. Roberts
So far, the aggressive work in getting up protests against the seating of Representative-elect Roberts of Utah is confined to the women of the Presbyterian churches. In Baltimore a meeting of the Woman's Home Mission Society of the Presbytery of Baltimore was held at the home of Mrs. Andrew B. Cross, the secretary of the organization. Mrs. Cross urged the society to join hands with the women's societies of the Presbyteries of New-York and Philadelphia.
"What has the Presbytery of Baltimore done concerning this important majority?" she asked. "We must take some action. Besides making a protest against the seating of Mr. Roberts we must not forget that we have Mormon elders among us, and it is reported that they have already made three converts from one of our Baptist churches."
It was decided to appoint a committee to confer with the women's societies of other evangelical churches to take concerted action in the matter, and Mrs. J. Appleton Wilson, Mrs. E. E. Weaver, Mrs. Robert H. Smith and Mrs. A. B. Cross were appointed.
At the meeting of the Cincinnati Presbytery strong resolutions were adopted against Representative-elect Roberts being allowed to qualify.
The women are acting mostly through the auxiliaries of their Home Missionary Society.
