Progress: Accommodations for the World’s Fair

From June 1938 to August 1943 (at which point its function was taken over by the Church Section of the Deseret News, at the request of the First Presidency), the Presiding Bishop issued a monthly bulletin called Progress of the Church, sent to ward and stake priesthood leadership. Because Progress dealt mostly with the practices and procedures of the Church, and less with doctrine, it is a fascinating record of changes and innovations in the visible culture, and also, in many cases, hints at problems or unauthorized innovations that needed to be corrected. I’ll be posting short articles from Progress for the next little while, mid-morning on Wednesdays, mostly without comment — but certainly welcome any discussion that might ensue.

Accommodations in New York City for the World’s Fair

Arrangements have been made at New York through the Stake Work Director, Roscoe W. Turner, at 2166 Broadway, to provide accommodations for members of the church in good standing who expect to attend the World’s Fair and desire accommodations at reasonable prices in the homes of Latter-day Saints. In order to take advantage of this service, it is requested that all persons obtain from their Ward Bishops a letter of recommendation, giving as much time as possible for the New York State Office to make proper arrangements.

In the Salt Lake City Region the requests for such accommodations are being accepted by the Salt Lake Regional Employment Office which in turn will correspond with the New York State Work Director, making the proper reservations. It is requested that bishops give publicity to this information in order that all who so desire may take advantage of provisions which have been made through the courtesy of our friends in New York Stake.
