The Nowells Give Gala Party
By Jean D. Griffith
Scene of a most delightful party one Saturday afternoon and evening was the beautiful Reynolds L. Nowell estate in Mendham, N. J. Dorothy and Patricia Nowell were the hostesses, and the guests included some thirty or so of their teenage friends—all sons and daughters of New Jersey Utahns.
Swimming and various outdoor sports and games were enjoyed during the afternoon, and in the evening there was campfire fun, with singing and folk dancing. The pretty girls and handsome boys who were there included Joan Bean, Barbara Jean Dittmore, Maurine Hawkins, Eleanor Leydsman, Ruth Moen, Jean Mortimer, Sharon Paul, Ruth Rose, Lucille Rose, Melba Smith, La Von Thomander, Donna Thomander, Roger Bean, Robert Ameling, Wendell Hyde Jr., De Loss Hyde, Henry Leydsman, George A. Mortimer, Peter Meyer, Clark Partridge, Brent Paul, Dean Smith, Alan Thomander, Louis Timm and Richard Wrathall.
Of particular interest to Utahns in New York is the recent announcement of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wells Sloan, of Riverdale, N. Y., of the marriage of their daughter, Carolyn Ivins Sloan, to Dr. Malcolm Breckenridge Carpenter, formerly of Denver, Colo. The newlyweds are enjoying a month's honeymoon in Colorado, after which they will return to New York to make their home. Dr. Carpenter is associated with the Medical Center here.
Mrs. Mae Neall of Salt Lake City is a visitor in New York these days. Mrs. Neall, who is a teacher in the Salt Lake public schools, is visiting with her daughters and sons-in-law and their families: the Peirce Bradys of Crestwood, N. Y. and the Lionel Cornwells of New Canaan, Conn.
Leaving New York to become Westerners once more are Mr. and Mrs. J. George Robinson, of Flushing, N. Y. George, who has been on the faculty at Rutgers University of New Jersey, and more recently at City College of New York, has accepted a teaching position at the University of Southern California. He and Edythe and their children, Linda and Hank, will make their home in Los Angeles.
A group of their friends gathered together on Saturday night to bid them goodbye. The affair was a no-host dinner party, held at the lovely home of Rudger and Ethel Jones in Bayside, Long Island.
Bill and Grace Pardoe, Lloyd and Olive Harris, Blair and Donna Luke, George and Elma Stoddard, Fred and Pat Page, Ella Hansen, Gerry Monson, and Harold and Elma Johnson were there.
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Firmage, of Summitt, N. J. have as their house guests Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fletcher, of Boston, Mass. Mrs. Fletcher is the former Rosemary Bennett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bennett of Salt Lake City.
Karl Macdonald is a traveling man again—having left on Saturday for Kingston, Jamaica, and Cuba. Mr. Macdonald is with Warner Brothers, in the foreign department, and his territory is widespread, including South America, Mexico, Japan and the Philippines.
