Brigham Young's Eldest Son

Devoting His Talents to Opposing Anti-Mormon Legislation.

[Special to the Eagle.]

WASHINGTON, May 21.

John W. Young, the oldest son of Brigham Young, has been the principal agent in the Mormon lobby working atainst the pending legislation to repress Mormon practices. He is said to possess many of the remarkable qualities of his father, including his wonderful energy and self reliance. Most of his property interests are in Utah, but he has also a business office in New York City. It is through him that the correspondence has been carried on and the money disbursed. His mother was the first of the seventeen wives of Brigham and he was the first of the fifty-two children of whom the great Mormon apostle was the father. All of the children of the differetn mothers are said to possess more or less of the characteristics of the father. Most of the girls were pronounced blondes and fine specimens of physical and intelectual womanhood. The majority of the sons and daughters are still in Utah, but some of them are in the Pacific States and some in England. The House Judiciary Committee has not finally acted upon the Senate bill before it. Several able arguments against the measure have been made before the committee by the eminent counsel engaged by the Mormon lobby. What the Mormons hope is that the Judiciary Committee will report some modification of the Edmunds bill, and in reconciling the differences which will spring up between the two Houses the calculation is so much time will be consumed that the session will be brought to a close before final action.
