To Keep Out Mormon Converts

The government authorities at the barge office in New York are preparing for an active campaign against the Mormon elders who go to Europe and return with converts to their polygamous faith. General O'Beirne said to-day that the several missionaries who work among the thousands of immigrants to these shores are united to a man against the importation of women and young girls, the latter especially, to live with the Mormons. General O'Beirne says that Colonel Weber will consult with the United States district attorney with a view of ascertaining if there is not some statute under which the Mormon elders can be restricted in their traffic with converts. He is of the opinion that no one has any doubt that the young girls brought to this country from Europe are brought to become the polygamous wives of the Mormons and that their landing may be prevented on the ground that they are to be used for immoral purposes.
